Restructuring by O2 to result in a cut in the market department by 10%

O2 LogoO2 is set to merge a number of divisions, which might see the marketing staff of 235 say goodbye to about 10% of its colleagues as they seek to streamline the structure of their marketing division.

O2 is also set to purchase Be Broadband and operate it in addition to O2, though the branding of Be Broadband will be kept as it is because of the high popularity of their brand.

The marketing of the products will be brought into the SME, broadband, consumer and corporate mobile teams by way of the mobile network operator. The creation of this customer service team, which will bring about ‘amazing O2 experiences’ will be created and O2 will be seeking a new division head.

The existing staff in O2 will be filling most of the main roles with Felix Geyr set to be the head of the broadband division, Shadi Halliwell to be brand activity’s head, head of strategy planning to be Simon Groves and SME marketing’s head to be Simon Devonshire.

Sally Cowdry, the marketing director, said that, though O2 is gaining in the broadband market, the market is still a challenging one. Change is one of the only few constants and they have to evolve, said Cowdry. Cowdry added that they have moved into offering multi – products and that the changes that they are making are such that they will align themselves to these multi – products.

As far as the mobile phone part is considered, the PAYG and contract marketing teams will be brought in as a single division during restructuring and, rather than focusing on the package that the customers purchase, the focus of marketing will be on particular segments of the market.

They have set November as the month for completing their restructuring and Cowdry said that the staff affected by the restructuring can apply for the newly created roles.

O2 is awarded with a top prize after results of a broadband survey

pcadvisorbestbuy200O2, a leading broadband service provider, has been honoured with a top award after the results of a broadband survey which involved nearly six thousand and five hundred people.

The PC Advisor Broadband Survey, conducted recently, saw O2 snatch one of the top awards and saw off competition from other broadband providers. The results of the survey led to O2 winning the ‘Best Buy’ broadband title, a prestigious one, despite close competition from other companies like ZEN Internet and Be Broadband.

More than six and a half thousand people were part of the survey and they were asked their opinions on a number of aspects of the broadband package they hand, including the download speeds, the reliability of service as well as the level of customer service. After the analysis of the responses to the survey, O2 came trumps and won the title ‘Best Buy’ broadband.

Commenting on the award, an O2 official said that they were very happy to have got the award and that it was a fantastic year for them and that they felt that they had a very impressive product at a reasonable price. He also said that their customers never have to worry about anything when they avail of O2’s services as they provide a number of benefits such as access to free internet security, no connection charges and free customers service. He also thanked everyone for voting for them and looked forward to the next year.

A spokesperson on behalf of the PC Advisor said that with a big response rate, their survey has gained its place in the country as one of the most trusted survey of its kind and that this year saw the rating and ranking of the top 14 ISPs in the country. Most of the ISPs got good results but O2 scored the most in the 3 fields mentioned earlier.

Telefonica

telefonicaSpain’s Dominant Telecoms Provider

Telefonica, S.A. is a global telecommunications company based in Spain.  It ranks among the largest operator of fixed-line and mobile communications services in the world in term of the number of clients. After its acquisition of O2 Plc, Movistar and Manx Telecom, it’s the world’s third largest behind China Mobile and Vodafone as of end of 2007.

A Long History

Founded as a government –owned telecoms company in 1924, Telefonica was the only telephone operator in Spain at that time.  Even after the communications industry was liberalized and the company privatized in 1997, Telefonica still enjoys a dominant position in the local market.

In January 2008, Telefonica acquired the UK operator O2 Plc for ₤17.7billion. As part of the acquisition deal, O2 retains its brand, network services and to remain in the UK.  O2 has global network service reach that includes Germany, Ireland and Isle of Man where it operates land-line telephone services.

The acquisition binge that included other telecom companies outside of Spain has made Telefonica a force in the global fixed line and mobile telecommunication industry.  It didn’t mind being fined by the EU for breaching its anti-trust laws.  In 2007, the European Commission ordered it to pay anti-trust fine of nearly 152 million for harming the Spanish broadband consumer markets and the Spanish business for its monopolistic activities.  The position was that harming an EU member state’s business interests and economy and by extension was tantamount to harming Europe’s economy.

Ownership

As a publicly owned and listed company, Telefónica has the following major stockholders:  JP Morgan at 10.02% holds the single largest block followed by Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentina SA, Caixa d’Estalvis I Pensionsde Barcelona, Citibank and Capital Group at varying percentages. For the balance, it is estimated that most of its stocks are owned by capital investment houses.

O2 Recipient of Multiple Awards

O2 Mobile BroadbandDuring the latest Internet Service Providers Association Awards, O2 garnered several awards. The company is UK's top mobile, fixed line and broadband service provider. Because of its recent success and recognitions, it is now celebrating all its achievements.

Because of this, recent reports professed that O2 has elevated itself to be to be one of the biggest mobile and broadband service provider in the region now that it has received a number of awards under its belt. This has significantly added to the already growing success of the Telefonica-owned company. O2 has been consistent in its continuing promotional strategies. Among the company's campaign is to have more broadband coverage in UK. They have already tied-up with major hotspots to have more Wi-fi coverage and engage more potential users to try out the services available.

Among the awards that O2 received were the Best Consumer Fixed Broadband Award and the Best Consumer Service Award. For the latter, the concession of the majority of the judges is that O2 was over-qualified for the award and has exceeded the expectations. The mobile and broadband service provider giant garnered the recognition because of its continuing excellence in customer service. The company can also pride itself in the fact that it has a small number of complaints from its users. O2 beat out its rivals: Virgin Media, Be Unlimited, Eclipse Internet, and PlusNet.

The other awards were enjoyed by Claranet and Vodafone. Claranet for Best Business Broadband Internet Service Provider award and Vodafone got the Best Consumer Mobile Broadband. The  Internet Service Providers Association Awards was held at the Grosvenor Marriott Hotel. However, for the over-all ratings, it was still O2 who out-shined the competition. It has, so far, became to one to beat.

Major Telecommunications Company Explains Exorbitant Fees

O2 Mobile Broadband The region's top mobile communications giant has recently been accused of charging extra added fees for going beyond the set data downloaded via mobile devices. The giant mobile company defends itself by saying that the expensive charges are there to limit the abuse of data transfers.

While all mobile communication service providers have packages with provisions for data downloading, they make sure that there will be capping system. Most consumers believe that their fixed line broadband service have unlimited downloading features.

The users of packages for mobile and broadband use should be aware that their set rates only include a certain amount of downloading time and data. If one goes beyond the inclusion in the package, the excess from the set limit will have to be charged accordingly. The company in question is said to have the highest charges for excess data downloads. The rate that they are charging  for the excess is being criticized by the public as users have been complaining that their bills have gone up unexpectedly just because they have exceeded the limit in their bundled packaged plans. One will find an unpleasant surprise when he sees that downloading more than the set provision is costing him so much.

O2 further explained that the excess charges are just to serve as a deterrent and as a way to impose stricter provisions to ensure that the users are aware that there are policies to be followed for data downloading. O2 professes that they send an SMS or a text message to the users when they reach the 50% usage limit and another one upon reaching 90% usage levels. Lastly, an official company representative added that “We are always at the fore-front of reminding our clients about our pricing structures, service bundle inclusions, and changes in the rates.”
